Sell Local Food Online and In-Person using Local Line’s POS System

Nina Galle Nina Galle Mar 08,2024

It’s here: Local Line’s own Point of Sale (POS) feature is now available in Local Line 2.0!

At Local Line, we’re committed to building the best sales software for farmers, producers, and food hubs; payments are a huge part of that.  In 2022, we launched LocalPay, Local Line’s payment gateway with lower credit card transaction fees than most other payment platforms.

At the end of 2023, we improved LocalPay to simplify the onboarding process, provide enhanced reporting, and accept ACH payments, saving farms even more on transaction fees.

Now, we’re excited to include a POS solution as part of LocalPay, so you can run all your payments through Local Line.

The POS feature enables you to log an order in Local Line, tap to send the order to your POS device, and then accept a customer's payment in person via credit card.

Why we built a POS system for farmers and food producers

Similar to using a POS system at a farmer’s market or in a retail store, customers can purchase on-site, pay via the LocalPay Terminal, and have the transaction logged in the Local Line platform. Customers can also place orders on your Local Line e-commerce store and pay on-site at pick up. Now, your Local Line account can be both an online ordering platform and a farm POS system!

We built this feature because we know that not every transaction happens online, and as a Local Line customer, you need a way to accept in-person payments but keep your inventory in sync.

As a Local Line customer, you can now use one account to track and organize all transactions, whether they are through online ordering or in-person. All orders are logged in the same place.

How our point-of-sale system works

If you are not using LocalPay yet, you can sign up by taking these steps:

  1. Go to your Payments page.
  2. Click the Payment Gateway Setup tab.
  3. Click Connect in the LocalPay box.

Get connected and start accepting in-person payments with our simple 1-2-3 Workflow:

  1. Pair the device - When you turn your device on it will display a pairing code that you enter into a text field located in the LocalPay section on your Payments > Payment Gateway Setup tab.
  2. Log an order - As you would do for any in-person sale with a couple of fewer clicks, such as not having to add fulfillment options.
  3. Send to device - Click to send the order to the device for payment.

It’s important to note that the ability to save a credit card to a Local Line account is not available through POS transactions. Subscription orders can be paid with POS as long as the credit card is saved in your customer’s Local Line account before making the in-person payment. Refunds are done in your Local Line account, and partial refunds are not currently supported. But, you can split payment between store credit and credit card with POS!

The POS supports all contactless and tap payment methods, including EMV, credit, debit, and mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Android Pay, etc.).

If you want to see the POS system in action, book a demo with our Sales team here. They will walk you through the features and answer any questions you may have.

LocalPay POS Devices

We are pleased to offer two POS devices for purchase. Both devices have a battery life of ~6-8 hours, are wireless, connect to wifi, and support various payment methods. The Ingenico Link 2500 is $419 USD + shipping, and Ingenico Move 5000 is $699 USD + shipping. You can order your POS device by completing this order form. The lead time is approximately five business days.

The POS feature is currently available only to U.S. customers. We plan to make it available for Canadian farms in the coming months.

For current Local Line customers, this feature is on the latest version of LocalPay, so any users on the old version will need to update. Updating is quick and free! If you aren’t sure which version you are on, and for help with getting updated, reach out to our support team at support@localline.ca.

Happy selling!
